Hey guys! new to reading this blog and I’m loving it:)

I am transitioning from relaxed hair to my natural hair. I have already cut off the relaxed bits at the point of my natural regrowth so I have a little afro. The thing is, one side of my hair is quite coarse and doesn’t curl like the other side of my hair which curls better. Also my ends are still quite dry. Looking at pictures from when I was young under the age of 10 and still had ‘virgin’ hair, my hair curled so beautifully all over my head! I really wish I didn’t start relaxing my hair in my teens but I did for it to be thinner. So, I want to know why the one side of my hair doesn’t curl the way it used to? will it be this way forever? and what products can I use to deep condition and help maintain it?

Hope someone can answer my questions, thanks.

  5. Hello Ladies
I love what you do, I am a Sowetan living in Denmark, just started my own blog, where I show different women rocking their natural hair. I am a nautural myself. I am new at this and would love for you to check my blog out and gives me some tips. By the way I follow you. There is a lack of natural girls being presented in Denmark. that is the drive behind this.

    good work.

Hi ladies, just when I resigned myself to finding a natural hair blog for women living in SA, I find you! I went natural earlier this year and since then have struggled to find sites or online vloggers and bloggers who can give advice and product reviews based on being here in SA. Don’t get me wrong, the international girls are great and have been a big help but I got so tired of hearing them swear by Giovanni or Suave products, stuff that I haven’t even seen here! So, cheers for catering to us African ladies. I look forward to catching up on your posts.

    Hi Pinky

Sometimes it’s best to consult a dermatologist when it comes to issues like alopecia. It’s really difficult for hair to just spring back after a lot of abuse we put it through. Also, try and keep your scalp clean enough for the pores to breath and not clog them with some of those products you’ve mentioned (a majority of them contain petroleum/petrolatum, which is the number one enemy as it clogs your pores.). Rather try natural, light oils like coconut oil (found at clicks or dischem), jojoba oil, rosemary oil etc.

We’re hoping to see you share your testimony with our readers one day. Good luck.

Hi, my desparation has lead me to this site. I had dreadlocks from 2002 to 2010 and one day just felt my head was heavy hence the cutting. So my hair has been natural since April 2010 and its in cornrows 90% of the time. I have a personal stylist that does my cornrows@ home, however I need a salon that understands natural hair around Pretoria or the East Rand in Gauteng. I have that rich thick hair and most stylist would like to see it relaxed or blow-dried. Also what products do you recommend that would keep it soft and managable?

Hi Ladies,i need help please my hair has never been soft unless if i relax it.but now my scalp is irritated because of the different relaxers ive been trying. Can someone please recommend something i can use to maintain healthy hair.Thank you

Hie guys, been natural since January oh boy my is kinky.I stay in Randburg can’t find shear butter or jom products anywhere I tried 4ways as well nothing.- have the 4a/4b type of hair that’s if that’s the kinkiest texture.Fro chick ladies where do you buy yo shear butter?

  14. FroChic said

Hi Pinki, I think the best cure is patience 🙂 Give your hair time and it will grow back. Another option is to leave it as is, in other words, maybe its best not to cornrow it too often. You can always wear nice hats or scarves to hide the hairline while its growing back. All the best!

Hi Gugu, I have used Yes to Carrots before, but only the conditioner. I must say it did have a nice citrucy-kind of smell to it and it was quite thick and creamy. I loved it on my hair but I didnt buy it again because I found it to be pricey for the amount you get. Last time I checked I think it was around R70 or so a bottle. Hope that helps.

    Hi Guys
I am new on this natural hair hype..i am so excited ,can somebody please explain to me how to keep my hair straight for @ least 3 days as i can only have it straight after a blow dry and 2 days after it goes back.
is it safe to dye my natural hair..i like it pitch black

  21. Gilbert said

Hi Ladies this is just a suggestion on your contact us page, how about you make the address bold and underline it. so that it attracts the naked eye. One other thing dont you need someone to maintain the site? Dont you also want a LOGO?

    Hi ladies,

I have recently discovered your blog and what perfect timing as I am transitioning from relaxed hair to natural hair. I absolutely love your blog!!
I would like to find out where I can get beautiful thick braids at a reasonable price in Jozi. I used to go to TnI when I was still a student in Cape Town and now I cannot seem to find a salon that uses the same “hot-water” hair piece that they used there – all I am seeing is the shiny, plastic looking “hot water” hair piece which does not look very good when your hair is in a half relaxed half natural state.

    Please help 😉

@ Nelisiwe – You can ask as many questions as you like, we dont mind. You are also welcome to email us at frochic@gmail.com if you have any more questions.

With regards to when you should cut your hair, there is no specific time, it all depends on how short you want to wear out your natural hair. If you feel the natural hair that is growing out is too short you can wait a while and do transitioning styles (like braids or plaits) in the meantime.

Regarding JO’M products, you can try other Clicks stores and see if they possibly have the products in stock. Or you can visit the JO’M website for contact details and ask them if for a list of Clicks stores that stock their products.
Natural oils are very good for our hair and you can find these at Clicks (they usually display them by the Multivitamins section). I hope that helps, but if you have any more questions, feel free to email us.

    Hi

Thank you so much for the feedback, truly appreciated.

Bear with me, i have a lot of questions (partly cause im excited about going natural but also i want to do this the right way!) I havent relaxed my hair for 6weeks now, is it an ok time to cut it or should i wait a bit longer? I have no qualms with short hair, i know it suits me well because i had it about 3yrs back but I want to get an idea if i’ll have a bit of natural hair to start off with when I cut off all my relaxed hair. I dont want a brush cut, i would like a bit of hair to take care of.

Also, I went to Clicks in Brightwater Commons to check out JOM hair products – and they dont have a lot of stock. I found the hair softener package but couldnt find a mosturiser. Do you know of a Clicks I can go to that has it?

Im interested in natural oils (used for body and hair) Where can I find them (e.g grapeseed oil etc) and things like shea butter. I have done some research and apparently they are very good for natural hair.

  30. frochic said

Hi Nelisiwe. Yes you can most definitely use the olive oil from your kitchen, it works well too. Clicks also sells olive oil in a bottle.

  31. natural said

    Hi

For the hair care home recipes, can i just use the olive oil i cook with in the kitchen? or is there a special one for external use?

  32. howzit JOM!
    You rock! AWESOME BLOG!

Do not hang your head in shame…i paved the way for natural hair before anyone thought natural was possible. so when i saw i had many followers who rediscovered their natuaral hair i had to leave the movement i began after all now it had fancy products like this one to sustain it so a pioneer must move on…. so i’ve moved on but definitely still holding on to JOM hair products.

once you use JOM Hair Products you can’t go back! you can’t use anything else!

God bless and keep keeping it real!
    love
    Siki

Thanks Esther! I’m not really an expert on dreads, since I dont have them but I think what all natural hair needs is moisture and lots of it. On my side the best advice I can give it to make sure you moisturise your dreads often, so that they dont get dry and dull-looking. You can use Jabu Stone products; try to use conditioner and also use good oils like olive oil and coconut oil.
On the dye, I will look into it and see what information I can get to help you out. Good luck with growing your dreads!

Hi Ladies, Love the blog! I need help. The thing is I hav dreadlocks and some time i don`t know how to manage them. Their long black thin ones. i hate to style, because I know my dreads are not too strong especially on the roots. when I mold them, they last for a week and i have to mold them again.I need advice on how to handle them. Oh… just the other day, I was thinking of applying dye on them but i`m not sure what colour to use. any suggestion?PLEASE HELP!!!

  36. frochic said

    Thanks ladies!
Dipuo aka dee regarding your question on keeping your hair soft and manageable, you can refer to the post: Our first product review: ORS hair products and you can also read the stories of other naturals featured in this blog for suggestions of hair products they use. Also be on the look out for hair products that contain ingredients like olive oil, coconut oil and shea butter – these are great in keeping hair soft and mosturised. Conditioners are also great in detangling any “knots” you many have in your hair. Apply conditioner to your damp hair, and detangle with a wide-tooth comb – it really works.
