Season’s Greetings Beautiful FroChics!

Posted by FroChic on 22/12/2011

Hey beautiful FroChics,

What an exciting year this has been for us as a South African hair blog. We got recognition from people we could only imagine to get attention from.

We gained more readers, subscribers, fans and followers who took part in this movement (in a Julius Malema tone).lol. We got more interaction from you guys, thousands of emails. For that, we can’t even describe how grateful we are.

We’re looking forward to a highly successful 2012 full of new projects, new contributing writers, new home & a whole lot more. Some of these projects are quite scary to us but we believe with your love & support, FroChic will reach new heights in the new year and natural hair will no longer be seen as a “style” but as (simply) hair.

To all our beautiful natural FroChic, have a blessed Christmas and a fabulous New Year.

Until we see each other in the new year…Adeos amigos!!

Love,

Matlhodi & Nangamso

The Winner of Eastgate Look of Fashion Rocks an Afro!

Posted by FroChic on 14/12/2011

Sunday night’s Miss South Africa Beauty peagant on Mzansi reminded me how long overdue this post is.

Anyway, we were excited to discover that one of this year’s winning pair of Eastgate Look of fashion, Carol Marie was natural…even better, she rocked a TWA at the event.  She succeeds former miss SA, Bokang Montjane.

Congratulations to the beautiful Carol and thanks for reppin the naturals out there.

Ain't she just pretty...

SA woman hid cocaine in dreadlocks…really now!

Posted by FroChic on 13/12/2011

“A South African woman was arrested at Bangkok’s international airport after police said they found 1.5kg of cocaine with a street value of 4.5 million baht (about R1.2 million) hidden in her dreadlocks, a news report said on Tuesday.

Nobanda Nolubabalo, 23, was searched on Monday when police said they noticed a white substance in her “hair” shortly after she stepped off a Qatar Airways flight.”
More on the story here.

LOL…I guess they didn’t have a choice but to do the “big chop”

I don’t know whether the fact that they’re not even real locks should come as a relief OR get me worked up since a lot of people can’t even tell the difference. Judging by the number of times I got this story forwarded to us via email, clearly people think these are real locs. Uh-Uh. Hold it right there. smh

Sweety, from the FroChic team & naturals who wear REAL locks…shame on you for dragging natural hair in the mud. smh!

Salon review: Saint Ane Hair Salon

Posted by FroChic on 09/12/2011

So I recently went to a hair salon for my occasional “length check” blow-drying  and must say my experience this time around was quite lekka.

I had already I coloured, washed & deep conditioned my hair at home (still don’t trust hair stylists in that department). See the thing about a lot of black hair salons is that they are brilliant with relaxed hair & dreadlocks… Afros? Not.

Aaanyway, check this out:

  1. When I walked in, I was greeted with a smile. Mind you there’s no reception area there but the warm smile & “Hello” alone made me feel super-welcome. That’s all a customer need. A FRIENDLY FACE.
  2. There were only 2 ladies on duty (it’s a pretty small salon in Malvern) and the other one asked me what I was there for (well she had worked on my hair before) and didn’t give me the nasty look when I told her I only needed a good blow-dry.
  3. She asked me POLITELY and NICELY to wait for a few minutes in the waiting area while she was finishing off the other client. I had to cut the poor lady some slack & put myself in the client’s shoes. I personally don’t appreciate it when a stylist works on my hair while multitasking.
  4. The 1st thing I saw when I sat on her workplace warmed my heart….A WIDE-TOOTHED COMB. Yessss!!!
  5. Next thing she took out the Dark & Lovely moisture seal spray. Another brownie point.
  6. And then I kindly reminded her that I didn’t want a lot of heat on my hair when she started blowdrying…and unlike the 1st time around she just gave me a sweet, I-remember-that “Sure”, while looking at me in the eye on my mirror reflection.lol
  7. I kid you not here… there was not tugging and pulling. No ouches (well maybe a few…you know my hair.lol)
  8. Overall, it was a pretty lekke experience.
  9. The best part was when she was done; I told her what a great job she had done & she said, in her French accent (she’s from Cameroon) “We hardly ever work on Afros here, so this was a challenge for me & I’m learning as we go”. A lot of stylists could learn from this girl; admit when you don’t know & STOP giving us the nasty look. Amen
I’m definitely going back there!
Salon name: Saint Ane (sp)
